Tours

East Sussex & Bodiam Castle

This tour typically runs on Wednesday at 10am

This day tour takes us into East Sussex. The first hour is mainly on tree covered country lanes. We then have the option to either drop onto a stunning bridleway which will take us through mature woodland far off the beaten track, or if the weather is poor and the trail becomes too muddy, we can stick with the lanes.

For lunch we stop in the lovely village of Salehurst where you can have a pub lunch at The Salehurst Halt (salehursthalt.co.uk) or sit in the quiet churchyard of St Mary's and enjoy your picnic.

After lunch, we will make our way through the small back lanes to the picturesque Bodiam Castle, a 14th Century moated Castle (nationaltrust.org.uk) where you can spend an hour or two wandering around, have an ice cream or even a quick pint in The Castle Inn (castleinnbodiam.co.uk)

For the final part of the tour, you have the choice to either continue riding back to Newenden on a trail for 2 miles with the last 2 miles on the road or, for a different experience, take the Dannie Lee boat trip back on the river (ticket price included) (bodiamboatingstation.co.uk)

This really is a great day out and we will arrive back between 4pm and 5pm.

This tour is approximately 18 - 25 miles.

Ride, Steam, Castle & Cruise

This tour typically runs on Saturday at 10am and Sunday at 10am

This tour is great if you are only visiting the area for the weekend or on a short break. You can combine all of the most popular things to do in the Wealden countryside. First you ride through the Stunning Rother Valley following the first 2 hours of our Rother Rider tour. Then you catch a steam or diesel train on the fantastic Kent & East Sussex Railway (www.kesr.org.uk) from Rolvenden Station to the enchanting 14th Century moated Bodiam Castle (nationaltrust.org.uk).

Here you can visit the castle grounds and have lunch in the National Trust tea room or the local pub The Castle Inn (castleinnbodiam.co.uk). You could take your own picnic which can be left with us and dropped off to you when we pick up the bikes as you get on the train. To top it off, take a lovely relaxing river cruise from the castle back to Newenden with Bodiam Boating Station (bodiamboatingstation.co.uk).

As a final treat why not visit the Lime Wharf cafe (limewharfcafe.co.uk) for a cream tea or ice cream when you come ashore or maybe have a pint in The White Hart (thewhitehartnewenden.co.uk). What a fantastic way to spend the day. Please note that there is a 5 minute walk from KESR Bodiam Station to Bodiam Castle.

Entrance into the castle isn’t included. Visit their website for further details (adult ticket £9.80) (nationaltrust.org.uk)

Romney Marsh & Wealden Woods

This tour typically runs on Thursday at 10am

This is our longest tour but as it is mainly on the marsh, it is one of the easiest.

We head out along the bank of the River Rother on the bridleway. We pass through Smallhythe, an ancient ship building town and part of the old River Rother course. Then we visit Chapel Bank, the churchyard of the original Ebony church, St Mary The virgin before stopping for lunch at The Ferry Inn pub (oxneyferry.com )

For the second part of the day, we will ride through the villages of Peasmarsh, Beckley and Northiam on small lanes and woodland trails.

This is a very interesting tour where we discover the history of the original course of the River Rother and ride through woods where some of this country's first iron works were established.

This tour can be ridden in either directions and there are plenty of little village shops en route to purchase refreshments.

This tour is approximately 22 - 26 miles.

Tow Path, Woods & Lanes

This tour typically runs on Friday at 2pm and Sunday at 2pm

This is a nice gentle tour which follows the River Rother on the grass path for a few miles. Then we head through the quiet country lanes up into the Wealden countryside and through the enchanting  Bixley Woods. After the woods, we will ride along the back lanes through Beckley and Northiam before crossing back over the steam railway (www.kesr.org.uk) and returning back to base at Newenden. The tour is between 11 and 15 miles depending on the size of the group.

This is probably the easiest of the tours and we will arrive back in time for you to have tea and cake at  Lime Wharf Cafe (limewharfcafe.co.uk) beside the river or a pint at The White Hart (thewhitehartnewenden.co.uk). What a great way to end a day.
